Michele Piccione
Multi-instrumentalist Musician – Ethnomusicologist
He was born in Palermo on February 02, 1982. His encounter with music, which from that moment on will become an integral part of his life, occurred at the age of six when he began studying classical guitar. In 2005 he graduated in Demoetnoantropological Heritage from the University of Palermo and here he discovered the other great passion of his life, that is, the research and study of peoples through their cultural products, of which music and musical instruments are among the greatest representatives. Parallel to the theoretical study of Ethnomusicology he then began the practical study of a variety of musical instruments belonging to different cultures of our planet, such as: Italian Cornice Drums (of which he is the teacher), Egyptian Darbuka, Persian Tombak, Cajon, Didjeridoo (Australia), Italian Bagpipes, Reed Flutes, Harmonic Flutes, Tin Whistle, Gaita Gallega (Galicia-Spain), Scottish Bagpipes, Armenian Duduk, Hulusi (China), Ghironda (Europe), Calabrian Lyre, Beating Guitar (Southern Italy), Marranzani (various parts of the World).
The wide variety of ethnic instruments played, leads him to collaborations with illustrious names in the national and international film, music and theater scene such as with Ennio Morricone and Giuseppe Tornatore on the occasion of the film “Baaria,” with Marco Bellocchio on the occasion of the film “Il Traditore,” with Roberto Andò in “l’Abbaglio” in which he participates as an instrumentalist in the soundtracks and appears as a musician/actor in some scenes. Among the various musical and theatrical collaborations we can mention, Enzo Avitabile, Eugenio Bennato, Mario Incudine, Giuliano Gabriele and Officine Meridionali, Alfio Antico, Ambrogio Sparagna, Stefano “Cisco” Bellotti, Zohra Lajnef, Pierre Vaiana, Salvatore Bonafede, Carlo Rizzo, Lucina Lanzara, Gioele Dix, Salvo Piparo, Ludovico Caldarera.
Since 2000 he has been teaching techniques on the Southern Italian Tamburi a Cornice in various festivals around Europe (Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, Spain, Portugal), and the USA (Boston, Lexington, New York) as well as holding a stable annual course at the Arci Tavola Tonda association in Palermo, of which he is a founding member.
In 2007 he founded the world music project LassatilAbballari, focused on European musical instruments and traditional dances, with which he recorded the album “Sounds of Southern Dances” and made several tours around the world: USA, Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, Spain, Poland, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland.
In 2011 he directed the ethnomusicological documentary “On the Footsteps of Sounds – Traditional Musical Instruments in Sicily Today,” produced and edited by Associazione S.A.C. and financed by Sicilia Film Comission – Mibac.
He has collaborated and collaborates on several occasions with the Chair of Ethnomusicology at the University of Palermo chaired by Prof. Sergio Bonanzinga.
Since 2017, he has been the musical coordinator of the Arci Tavola Tonda Orchestrina.
