Starting from the hurdy-gurdy/bagpipe duo, emblematic of Central France’s music, La Machine offers a sinuous and hypnotic sound. Opposite them, the percussion/double bass duo provides an unmistakable groove, a swaying rhythmic foundation with Afro-Cuban influences.
Julien Barbances’ voice, with its unique vibrato and a tone far from the usual traditional singing styles, brings a surprising reinterpretation of collected folk songs.
After 15 years of existence, around 400 performances, 4 albums, and a DVD, La Machine is now recognized in France and internationally for its drone-based, repetitive, and trance-like music, which has earned them invitations to major traditional and contemporary music festivals, as well as the Cannes Festival.
