Senhal – Occitan Music

Speciality

The band, active for about thirty years with two albums released and numerous recordings by individual members with other groups, offers music from the reinterpretation of the Occitan valleys of the Cuneo’s traditional songs to new compositions. The language of Occitan music serves as an expressive medium and an opportunity to develop an original narrative that defines the distinctive and unique sound of Senhal.
The three members of Senhal have played in many bands and collaborated with prominent musicians in the field (Mount-Joia, Lou Dalfin, Patrick Vaillant, Maurizio Martinotti, Artezin, Compagnons Roulants, Le vijà, La Grande Orchestra delle Alpi, Tradalp…) and have contributed to various revival, anthology, and research publications alongside researchers of folk traditions such as Jan Peyre de Bousquìer.

The word “senhal” refers to a discriminatory and humiliating sign imposed on children caught speaking the Occitan language in schools in southern France, used until the early 20th century to enforce the use of the French language. The group’s aim is to overturn this negative meaning by offering a symbol of the rebirth of Occitan culture through music.
On the occasion of the Gran Bal Trad, Senhal will present an Occitan repertoire, focusing on dances accompanied by singing.
