Vola Palomma – Grande Lucania

Speciality

“Vola Palomma” is a traditional folk music group from Lucania, consisting of four members who bring to squares and theaters the songs, music, lullabies, tarantellas, pizzicas, serenades, quadrilles, polkas, and mazurkas from the pastoral and peasant traditions of “Grande Lucania.”
“Grande Lucania” was a region slightly larger than present-day Basilicata; it included parts of the Cilento area, some regions of Calabria around Mount Pollino, and areas of neighboring Puglia. This historical connection expands Vola Palomma’s repertoire to include music and songs from these geographic areas as well.
The group has performed extensively in Italy and abroad (Bern, Stuttgart, London, Luxembourg, Belgium, Colombia), especially within Lucanian and Italian communities.
At the festival, they will also offer an engaging workshop on building the “cupa cupa,” an old-fashioned bass instrument. This instrument was traditionally used for love serenades, carnival songs and popular rituals.

Artists:
Donato Vena: vocals, tambourine, cupa cupa, flute
Giancarlo Corcillo: accordion, diatonic accordion, guitar
Cristina Farcas: vocals, castanets, tammorra (traditional drum), dance, acting
